Next week, Prime Minister Modi sets to launch Mizoram's first considerable railroad line.

The long-awaited Bairabi-Sairang railway line in Mizoram is set to open next week, marking a significant milestone in the state's connectivity. This new broad-gauge line, spanning a distance of 51.38 kilometres, will connect Aizawl to the national network, offering immense relief to the state's residents and businesses.

The project, executed in four segments - Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang - will integrate Mizoram with Silchar in Assam through the Bhodahpur Junction. The line will pass through four stations - Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang, and Sairang-Sihhmui.

The Bairabi-Sairang railway line promises to boost trade, tourism, and socio-economic development in Mizoram. It includes 55 major bridges, the longest measuring about 1.3 kilometres, along with 87 minor bridges, five road overbridges, and six road underbridges. The tallest bridge on the line is the Krung Bridge at Sairang, which stands 114 metres above the ground, and the tallest pier, P-4 of bridge number 196, stands at 104 metres.

The project, costing an estimated INR 5,021 crore, features 48 tunnels spanning a total of 12.85 kilometres, with the longest tunnel stretching 1.37 kilometres. The new railway line is expected to reduce the travel time for essential goods currently transported by road from Silchar, a journey of about 10 hours, to just three hours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the Bairabi-Sairang railway line on September 13, 2025. The Indian Railway Minister for the occasion will be Ashwini Vaishnaw. This development is part of Indian Railways' plan to extend similar connectivity to Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Sikkim by 2030.

With the Bairabi-Sairang railway line, Mizoram will finally be connected to India's national railway network, promising cheaper travel, easier freight movement, and an overall boost to Mizoram's Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).
