News Demonstration of Collaborative News Distribution System by Reuters and AWS Scheduled at IBC2025
Reuters and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are set to demonstrate a groundbreaking news distribution system during IBC2025. This collaboration aims to revolutionise the way news content is shared, making it available almost instantly to any broadcast or distribution partner.
The system, known as TAMS (Time-Addressable Media Store), addresses the challenges of taking a lift-and-shift approach to running fast-turnaround media workflows in the cloud. TAMS is integrated with video understanding models from TwelveLabs, in Amazon Bedrock, to create embeddings of news content in real time.
Several other renowned news organisations, including BBC, CNN, Sky, and Elliott Media, are collaborating with AWS to utilise TAMS. The collaboration includes building an interoperable framework that provides a single virtual store for live content, making it faster and seamless for creators to craft video highlights clips and packages.
For the demo, live video feeds from UK Parliament, Reuters live feeds, and Reuters produced short-form video on-demand (VOD) content will be ingested directly into the Reuters TAMS store. The TAMS on AWS implementation will also leverage the system to store, query, and access segmented media over HTTP.
The demonstration will not only showcase TAMS' capabilities but also its potential to significantly reduce the time needed to share content and lower associated costs. TAMS can help one reputable organisation be the source of truth for content, increasing efficiency and freeing time and resources for elements that differentiate programming.
Reuters will ingest UK Parliament feeds produced by the Parliamentary Broadcasting Unit, transmit them using TAMS to AWS, and provide the content near instantly to broadcasting and distribution partners.
The collaboration extends to AWS Partners Mimir, Adobe, Techex, Matrox, and CuttingRoom, who are also involved in the demonstration. Attendees can find additional resources and schedule time with AWS at the AWS IBC Booth (Hall 5, Stand C90).
The system uses the open-source Time-Addressable Media Store (TAMS) API specification and AWS services including Amazon S3, AWS Elemental MediaConvert, and AWS Step Functions.
A panel discussion at 12:45 PM in the AWS IBC Showcase Theatre will feature Reuters, BBC, Sky, and CNN, discussing challenges, collaborations, and new opportunities with TAMS. The discussion promises to be an insightful exploration of the future of news content distribution.
TAMS was first implemented by AWS for a fast-turnaround workflow at IBC 2024 as a proof-of-concept supported by the Cloud Native Agile Production (CNAP) project. The CNAP collaboration includes BBC, Sky, Adobe, Cutting Room, Drastic Technologies, Techex, and Vizrt, aiming to advance the development and adoption of the TAMS open-source framework.
Reuters and AWS are also collaborating with the BBC, BT, and Ordnance Survey to demonstrate the TAMS approach for rapid and secure news content distribution at IBC2025. This collaboration underscores the potential of TAMS to transform the news industry, making content distribution faster, more efficient, and more cost-effective.
