"New social media platform exclusive to Denmark unveiled in an attempt to seize control from tech titans"
A new social media platform, Meningspunktet, has been launched in Denmark, marking a significant move towards reclaiming online discourse from US tech giants, bots, and advertisements. This innovative platform, primarily intended for Danish residents, aims to connect users with their local communities through a connection to their Danish municipality.
The brainchild of Thomas Madsen-Mygdal, Meningspunktet distinguishes itself from US tech companies like Facebook, X, and Instagram by verifying the identity of its users. Unlike these platforms, users of Meningspunktet will not be served unwanted ads. Instead, advertising on Meningspunktet will come from pages and companies that users have opted to follow.
The founder of Meningspunktet, Tue Oxenvad, expresses concerns about the use of data by social media giants to sell advertising and train AI, viewing it as a democratic problem. To address this issue, Meningspunktet will be free for ordinary users, financed by monthly fees from politicians, media outlets, businesses, and other organisations.
Meningspunktet users will have access to local debates, events, and decision-makers, as well as the opportunity to follow national debates and media. The platform will require users to verify their identity using Denmark's national digital ID, MitID, but the verification process does not involve storing user data.
The data that is collected is kept at the Technical University of Denmark in Lyngby. Meningspunktet is co-owned by Tue Oxenvad, who hopes to move away from the current model of focusing exclusively on profit and instead prioritise public debate.
Users will still be able to access content from outside of Denmark, for example, through platforms like YouTube. Meningspunktet is designed to link users to their local communities and foster a more engaging, ad-free, and user-verified online experience.
