New Play *Innere Häuser* Gives Voice to Homeless Women’s Hidden Struggles

A new documentary theatre piece called Innere Häuser is bringing the hidden struggles of homeless women into the spotlight. The production, staged in Gütersloh, weaves together the real-life experiences of four women who have faced housing insecurity. Behind the project is a collaboration between the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts, FrauenSalon, Wohnungslosenstiftung, and Queer Home.

The performance centres on personal stories of homelessness, each told through different artistic approaches. Janina Berthold’s section recreates the interior of a German rail car—a nod to the nights she spent sleeping on trains while without a home. At one point, she points to a floor plan of her current flat and says, ‘There they are—my four safe walls.’

Innere Häuser turns personal hardship into a visible, shared experience. The production highlights not just the struggles of homelessness but also the systemic changes needed—from better digital access to discrimination-free support. For the women involved, the project is both a creative outlet and a demand for real-world solutions.
