New permanent showcase at the German Maritime Museum in Bremerhaven - "Ships and the sea: our world" debuts.
The German Maritime Museum (DSM) is set to unveil its latest permanent exhibition, "Shipworlds - The Ocean and Us", on July 18. This exciting new exhibit will be housed in the Bangert Building of the museum.
At the heart of the exhibition is a research ship, a testament to the enduring relationship between humanity and the sea. The exhibition is divided into five thematic areas: Shipbuilding, Ship and Physics, Ship and Environment, Ship and Equipment, and Research Shipping.
Visitors can expect a rich and interactive experience, with over 1,500 model ships on display in the intro area. The exhibition also features more than 2,000 exhibits from two centuries, including model ships, harpoons, and a sperm whale skeleton.
The research ship "Meteor", a symbol of maritime exploration, is also a central feature of the exhibition. Although the current fourth Meteor ship is under construction and expected to enter service in 2026, the original Meteor conducted the German Atlantic Expedition from 1925 to 1927.
The exhibition provides answers to questions about ships, their history, and the forces of the sea. It also illustrates why important insights sometimes require office routine and highlights the connection between adventurous expeditions and "Big Data".
The summer season, until October 30, 2024, will see the exhibition open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. During this period, admission includes access to the new permanent exhibition, the Kogge Hall with all special exhibitions, and (in the summer season) access to the ships in the museum harbor.
Admission for adults is 10 euros, with a reduced rate of 5 euros. For more information about the extensive accompanying program, including guided tours, visit the museum's website at this link.
In the winter program, from October 31, 2024, the exhibition will be open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The exhibition's theme is the ocean and us, not us and the ocean, reflecting the museum's commitment to fostering a deeper understanding of our relationship with the sea.
