New Mobile CPU from Qualcomm Delivers Onboard RFID Functionality, Setting a Distinctive Benchmark in the Industry

Qualcomm has unveiled its latest innovation, the Dragonwing Q-6690, a versatile enterprise mobile processor designed to accelerate innovation across various industries.

The Dragonwing Q-6690 offers software-configurable packs that allow manufacturers to customise computing power, multimedia support, camera capabilities, and peripheral options for specific devices. This customisation makes the Dragonwing Q-6690 suitable for use in devices across retail, logistics, and industrial environments.

One of the key features of the Dragonwing Q-6690 is its integration of RFID directly onto the chip, eliminating the need for separate RFID reader modules. This integration results in slimmer devices, making them more practical for use in a wide range of settings.

The Dragonwing Q-6690 is expected to power a variety of products from device makers such as Zebra, Honeywell, Urovo, HMD Secure, and CipherLab, with commercial availability anticipated in the coming months. The RAIN Alliance believes that this integration of RFID could transform operations and create new connected markets.

For retailers, the new chip could be used for product tracking and store operations, while for industrial and logistics settings, the integration could speed up and simplify processes that rely on RFID scanning. The Dragonwing Q-6690 is also capable of supporting rugged handhelds, point-of-sale systems, kiosks, and other commercial form factors.

In addition to its RFID capabilities, the Dragonwing Q-6690 offers built-in 5G, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and ultra-wideband support. This makes it a powerful platform for contactless applications such as access control, asset tracking, product authentication, and real-time inventory management.

Art Miller, vice president and head of retail at Qualcomm, expressed excitement about working with retailers that need platforms that are not only powerful and connected, but also adaptable to evolving customer expectations. He stated that the Dragonwing Q-6690 combines integrated RFID, AI, and next-gen wireless capabilities in a single, scalable platform.

There is a report suggesting that Qualcomm might be preparing to enter the data center market. However, further information about this development is not yet available.

In other news, Google has patched a major Qualcomm security flaw affecting Android phones. This patch addresses a vulnerability that could allow an attacker to gain system-level access to a device.

Qualcomm has also launched new IoT technology for industry, aiming to further its position as a leader in the IoT sector. The company continues to innovate and push the boundaries of what is possible in the realm of mobile technology.
