New Miniseries Honors Krasnoyarsk's Forgotten WWII Home Front Heroes
A new miniseries, Krasnoyarsk: The Home Front Heroes, has drawn praise for its portrayal of wartime contributions on the home front. The six-episode production blends archival footage with a fictional story about a grandfather and grandson recording a podcast. Local officials and veterans have welcomed the project as a tribute to unsung heroes.
The screening attracted a diverse audience, from labour veterans to young cadets. Many attendees shared personal memories of the era, highlighting the series’ emotional impact.
The miniseries focuses on the often-overlooked efforts of workers in Krasnoyarsk during World War II. Each episode highlights a different group, including railroad engineers, scientists, and factory labourers. Among the featured stories is that of Lyubov Stepanova, the Yenisei Fleet’s sole female mechanic and the first in the entire USSR.
The Yenisei Shipping Company played a crucial role in the war, transporting over 3 million tons of cargo to supply the front and defence plants. More than 2,000 of its river workers left their jobs to fight on the front lines. Mikhail Likhansky, another key figure, developed a new method for towing timber rafts on the Yenisei River, improving efficiency during the conflict. Vladimir Rukousev, a veteran of the company, recalled the harsh conditions faced by those who remained. His accounts, alongside others, form part of the miniseries’ narrative. The cast includes Vladimir Steklov, Arseny Metzger, and Darya Stepanova, who bring these historical stories to life. Irina Subocheva, a deputy in the Krasnoyarsk Legislative Assembly, praised the series and suggested it deserves a sequel. She noted its importance in preserving local history for future generations.
The miniseries has already sparked discussions about the region’s wartime legacy. Its mix of real footage and fictional storytelling has resonated with audiences of all ages. Organisers hope the project will encourage further recognition of home front contributions during the war.
