New Lottery for the 2026 Olympics: "Sports Funding on Dependence"

The Italian government has proposed a new state lottery called Win For Italia Team to fund public sports and preparations for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics. Critics, however, warn that the scheme could worsen gambling addiction in a region where nearly €9 billion is already wagered each year.

The lottery plan aims to raise money for CONI (the Italian National Olympic Committee) and local sports projects. But opposition has grown quickly. Senator Antonio Tajani filed an amendment to block the proposal, urging the Autorità per le Garanzie nelle Comunicazioni (AGCOM) to step in.

Critics, including the national campaign Mettiamoci in Gioco, argue that linking sports funding to gambling normalises risky behaviour. Democratic Party lawmaker Stefano Vaccari highlighted the scale of the problem, noting that tens of thousands in Emilia-Romagna alone struggle with gambling addiction. Opponents fear the lottery could become a permanent fixture rather than a temporary measure.

The debate over Win For Italia Team centres on balancing financial needs for the Olympics with public health concerns. If approved, the lottery would add another gambling option in a country where annual wagers already reach billions. The outcome now depends on whether Tajani’s amendment gains support or the government pushes forward with its funding plan.
