The BJP has made a significant return to power in Delhi after a 27-year governance gap, with Rekha Gupta assuming the role of Chief Minister.

Gupta's political journey began as the president of the Delhi University Students Union. Her association with the RSS-ABVP has played a crucial role in shaping her political ideology. This appointment marks her first time as an MLA.

The BJP's victory comes amidst a steady rise in women voting across the country. In the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections, the female voter turnout was 60.92%, higher than the 60.21% turnout of male voters. The selection of Gupta is a strategic move to consolidate and capitalize on the growing influence of female voters.

The BJP's double engine, referring to the combination of the central and state governments being led by the same party, aims to accelerate Delhi's development journey. The Union government, which has had a decade-long running battle with the AAP, has pledged its support for Gupta's government.

Gupta and the BJP have reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing welfare schemes, such as free bus travel for women. They have also promised free screenings for cervical, breast, and ovarian cancer in Delhi government hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana. Additionally, the BJP's election manifesto included the Mahila Samridhi Yojana, offering a monthly financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to women. The party also promised a total of Rs 21,000 and six nutritional kits for every pregnant woman.

However, Gupta faces challenges in fulfilling election promises, such as financial assistance to women, cleaning the Yamuna, addressing air pollution, and infrastructure issues. She will need to address the expectations set by the AAP's high standard of governance.

Despite having a narrow two percent vote share difference with the BJP, the AAP continues to have a significant presence in Delhi's underprivileged communities. The AAP government set a high standard for governance in Delhi, and it remains to be seen how Gupta's leadership will compare.

With a blend of experience, strategy, and fresh appeal, Gupta's leadership could be pivotal in Delhi's future. Her swearing-in ceremony took place on [insert date], marking the beginning of a new chapter in Delhi's political history.
