Nevada Leads in Sports Betting per Capita

In the post-PASPA era, Nevada remains the undisputed leader in per-capita sports betting, a title it has held since prior to the 2018 Supreme Court ruling. Despite ceding its crown as the king of the US sports wagering market, the Silver State continues to dominate in terms of sports betting activity per resident.

The in-person registration requirement, however, could be costing the state money. Unlike many other states, Nevada requires residents to visit casinos for mobile betting account sign-ups. This mandate has kept the two largest sportsbook companies, FanDuel and DraftKings, out of the Nevada market.

Arizona, a state that has recently loosened its in-person registration rules, ranks fifth in per-capita sports betting and is considered a credible threat to pass Nevada in revenue terms. Colorado, Kansas, Iowa, and Massachusetts round out the top ten. In comparison, the average sports bets placed in New Jersey and New York are $1,398 and $1,087 respectively, significantly higher than Nevada's average.

Interestingly, Kentucky has recently achieved some of the highest per-capita sports betting totals with rapid revenue growth. This rapid growth could potentially challenge Nevada's lead in the US sports betting market in the future.

A study by Gamdom Casino, a French cryptocurrency casino operator, revealed that the average Nevada resident places $1,815 worth of sports bets, nearly triple the national average. The study was provided to The Las Vegas Review-Journal.

If Nevada were to loosen the in-person registration mandate and FanDuel and DraftKings were to enter the state, the state's sports wagering, handle, and revenue could grow significantly. Currently, Nevada still leads in per-capita sports betting, but states like Arizona and Kentucky are closing the gap.

It's worth noting that currently, some form of sports betting is operational in 38 states and Washington, DC, with Missouri set to join this group next year. The data is astounding in its scale, according to Felix Romer, founder of Gamdom. It's interesting to see which states are embracing sports betting the most.
