Nevada cracks down on illegal gambling with sweeping new law

Nevada is set to tighten its grip on illegal gambling with a new law. Senate Bill 256 (SB 256), introduced by Senator Rochelle Nguyen, has cleared both legislative chambers with overwhelming support. The measure now awaits final approval from Governor Joe Lombardo to take effect. The bill targets both physical and online gambling operations that bypass state regulations. It empowers Nevada to pursue out-of-state operators accepting bets from its residents. If passed, SB 256 will impose harsh penalties, including felony charges, on those involved in illegal gambling activities.

Money seized from these operations will be redirected to Nevada's General Fund. The legislation also addresses the growing issue of offshore and unregulated online casinos, which often operate in legal grey areas. Industry groups, including the Nevada Gaming Control Board and the Nevada Resort Association, have backed the proposal.

The American Gaming Association estimates that illegal online casinos processed over $400 billion in bets in 2024 alone. This unregulated activity reportedly cost legal US operators more than $17 billion in lost revenue. While no official figures exist on recent crackdowns, some states have already taken actionβ€”blocking platforms like Kalshi and Polymarket after federal scrutiny.

Both the Assembly and Senate approved SB 256 unanimously, with votes of 42-0 and 20-0 respectively. The bill's passage signals strong bipartisan support for stricter gambling enforcement in the state. The law will give Nevada broader authority to combat illegal gambling, both in-person and online. If signed by Governor Lombardo, it will introduce stricter penalties and financial seizures. The move aims to protect legal operators and state revenue from unregulated betting activities.
