From 'Lost Place' to State Garden Show - Neuss on the Verge - Neuss Transforms Old Racetrack into a Lush Urban Park This Spring
A former horse racing track in Neuss is set to become a vibrant urban park this spring. The North Rhine-Westphalia State Horticultural Show (Landesgartenschau) will open on April 16 and run until October 11, transforming 38 hectares of land into a green space for visitors to explore. Organisers expect at least 650,000 people to attend over 1,000 planned events during the six-month show.
The project carries a €60 million budget, with €25 million coming from public funds. The site's grandstand and sand racing circuit have been kept, though the latter has been turned into a dry biotope to support local wildlife. Meanwhile, over 20,000 square meters of flowers—including perennials, roses, and wildflower meadows—will cover the grounds, offering colour and variety throughout the seasons.
Families will find plenty to enjoy, with three new adventure playgrounds featuring two life-sized plastic horses for children to climb on. Day tickets are priced at €20 for adults, while concessions cost €10, and children and teens under 17 pay just €5. The park is designed as a lasting legacy, with 95% of its structures staying in place after the show ends. This approach ensures the area remains a green space for the community long term. Elsewhere in the region, the trotter racetrack in Mönchengladbach is also undergoing change, with plans to redevelop it into a commercial zone by 2029.
The Landesgartenschau will turn a disused racing track into a thriving park for both the event and future use. Visitors can explore gardens, playgrounds, and repurposed historic structures until October. After the show closes, nearly all of the park's features will remain, providing a permanent green space for Neuss.
