Nettetal’s Red Cross Wins Award but Struggles with Volunteer Shortages

The German Red Cross (DRK) branch in Nettetal has been recognised for its vital community work. In October 2025, the organisation secured third place in Nettetal’s Volunteer Prize for its Blood is Colorful campaign. Behind the scenes, however, the group faces growing challenges—from staffing shortages to rising operational costs.

The DRK Nettetal plays a key role in the region, managing refugee support, disaster response, and local blood donation drives. Christian Wagner, chair of the branch, has repeatedly highlighted how these efforts strengthen community bonds and save lives. Yet, maintaining these services has become harder as expenses for training, equipment, and day-to-day operations continue to climb.

To keep up with demand, the branch urgently needs new volunteers. Jonas Frederic Rösch, who leads the emergency response team, stressed that fresh recruits are essential for sustaining their life-saving work. Those interested in helping can reach him directly at +49 151 52350379 or via email at [email protected]. Financial support is equally critical. Norbert Müller, the branch’s treasurer, pointed out that donations help cover costs that volunteers alone cannot. He encouraged residents and businesses to contribute, with inquiries welcome at [email protected]. Despite these hurdles, the DRK Nettetal remains a cornerstone of local aid. Their recent award for the Blood is Colorful initiative proves how deeply their work resonates with the community—even as they push for more hands and funds to carry it forward.

The DRK Nettetal’s third-place finish in the Volunteer Prize reflects its ongoing commitment to the area. But with staffing gaps and higher expenses, the branch now depends more than ever on volunteers and donors. Without increased support, some of its critical services could face cutbacks in the months ahead.
