Netflix Sets to Develop Documentary Series on the 2016 Bitfinex Cryptocurrency Exchange Theft

Netflix is set to delve into the world of digital currencies with a new project that tells the real-life story of the biggest financial crime case in history related to cryptocurrency.

The series, titled "Bitfinex," will be directed by Chris Smith, known for his work on "FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened" and "Tiger King." Smith will also serve as an executive producer, alongside Nick Bilton, who has previously worked on shows like "Fake Famous," "The Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley," and "American Kingpin: The Epic Hunt for the Criminal Mastermind Behind the Silk Road."

At the heart of this financial scandal are Ilya "Dutch" Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, a couple accused of involvement in the largest financial cryptocurrency-related crime in history. Heather Morgan, also known by her stage name Razzlekhan, is Russian, while Ilya Lichtenstein is her husband.

The duo is alleged to have conspired to launder nearly 119,754 bitcoins, currently worth around $4.5 billion. The stolen crypto assets were worth around $71 million at the time of the crime.

The Department of Justice has recovered $3.6 billion from this case, which marks the largest financial seizure ever. This recovery was made from the laundering of these nearly 119,754 bitcoins.

The "Bitfinex" documentary series promises to provide an in-depth look into this intriguing case, offering insights into the world of digital currencies and the challenges posed by their use in criminal activities.

Ilya "Dutch" Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan (Razzlekhan) have been arrested in connection with this case. The details of their arrest and the ongoing legal proceedings will undoubtedly be a significant part of the series.

Stay tuned for more updates on this fascinating project as Netflix continues to bring captivating stories to life.
