Netflix Experimenting with Auto-Pause Function for Titles after Predefined Duration

Netflix is currently testing a new mobile feature on select Android devices, allowing users to set a timer for watching a series or movie. The feature, if rolled out more broadly, could provide more control over the viewing experience for members.

To use the timer, look for the clock or timer icon in the upper-righthand corner of the screen after playing a title on the platform. From there, you'll be able to set your timer for the title you're currently viewing. The feature ends the title at the specified minute mark when enabled.

The timer is currently limited to adult profiles and is intended to complement, rather than compete with, sleep. Netflix stated that the feature isn't meant to replace good sleep hygiene but could be beneficial for passive viewing before bedtime or for setting increments of streaming time based on a workout.

The test of Netflix's timer function is currently available only on select Android devices, but specific models are not listed in the available search results. A spokesperson for Netflix stated that the company is always looking for ways to improve the Netflix mobile experience and that this test is the latest example of Netflix experimenting with new features.

If the test is successful and improves the member experience, Netflix will consider rolling out the feature more broadly. The feature could also be beneficial for parents who want to limit screen time for their kids.

The news was earlier reported by The Verge. Netflix emphasised that the timer feature is a part of a test by the company to improve the member experience. The spokesperson described the new timer as giving members more control over their viewing experience.
