Netflix Chief Eager to Emulate Disney'sstride
Netflix, the global market leader with 193 million subscribers across 190 countries, is considering a significant change to its account policy. The streaming giant is exploring the possibility of implementing a sharing feature, which would allow users to share their accounts with friends and family.
This potential shift would be a departure from Netflix's current policy of one account per household. It could potentially be a response to the rise of password-sharing services, aiming to offer a more formal and controlled solution for sharing Netflix content.
The sharing feature, if implemented, would be available to premium subscribers only. Each additional household member would be required to provide their email address for account management purposes.
Netflix's CEO, Reed Hastings, has expressed a desire to expand the sharing of Netflix content among its subscribers. Hastings attributes Netflix's success to his leadership style of no rules, which encourages employees to think for themselves and self-organise without waiting for guidelines from California management.
The success of Netflix productions such as "Stranger Things", "The Witcher", and "The Umbrella Academy" has been attributed to their franchise potential. These series, along with others, are among Netflix's productions with the potential to build franchises, similar to Disney's Marvel's superhero universe "Avengers" and "Frozen". Building franchises will play a bigger role for Netflix in the future.
The creators of "Stranger Things" are Matt and Ross Duffer, "The Witcher" was developed by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, and "The Umbrella Academy" was developed by Steve Blackman.
Netflix's goal is to surpass Disney in various aspects. In addition to the potential sharing feature, Netflix is exploring various strategies to increase its financial gains, including the sale of fan merchandise. The success of Netflix productions has opened up opportunities for merchandise sales, as fans show their support for their favourite series.
The implementation of the sharing feature could face challenges in terms of content licensing and piracy. However, if successful, it could help boost Netflix's subscriber base and revenue, contributing to Netflix's ambition to surpass Disney in the streaming industry.
Despite the competitive landscape, Netflix's CEO, Reed Hastings, admires and respects Disney. Hastings believes that competition drives innovation and improvement, and he looks forward to seeing how both companies continue to shape the future of entertainment.
