"Neilson Powless, to everyone's surprise, outpaced Wout in a swift race to claim victory at Dwars door Vlaanderen"
Neilson Powless, the American cyclist from EF Education-EasyPost, has secured a stunning victory in the cobbled classic, Dwars door Vlaanderen, held on Wednesday. This marks the second consecutive win for America at this prestigious event, following last year's triumph by Sepp Kuss.
The decisive move was made ahead of the Berg Ten Houte climb, where Matteo Jorgenson, Wout van Aert, Tiesj Benoot, and Edoardo Affini burst clear from the peloton. Despite Affini dropping away, the flying Visma trio set a punishing pace, with only Powless able to keep up.
As the quartet reached the summit, they quickly passed Josh Tarling (Ineos Grenadiers). Jorgenson took the leading four into the final sweeping right-hand bend before the finish and then peeled off, allowing Benoot to lead out Van Aert.
In a thrilling finish, Jorgenson and Benoot attempted to set up their teammate for victory. However, it was Powless who unleashed a powerful sprint that took him past Van Aert and over the line to seal the win.
Powless expressed his happiness and gratitude after the win, praising his team's strategy and his own determination.
Mads Pedersen, who finished in fifth place, repeatedly attempted to force a split in the main field and instigate a move to go after the leading riders, but the peloton lacked cohesion.
The race reached its finale in Waregem, where Benoot completed the podium for Visma, with Jorgenson coming home in fourth place.
