Negotiations on nuclear matters between Iran and European powers will recommence next week
In a series of developments, Iran and major world powers have agreed to restart negotiations on nuclear issues and sanctions. The talks, scheduled for Tuesday, will involve Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and the foreign ministers of France, Britain, and Germany.
The announcement follows reports by Al-Jarida that Iran is not far from developing a bomb. However, it's important to note that US intelligence chief Tulsi Gabbard previously confirmed no evidence of weaponization by Iran.
Tehran has denied seeking nuclear weapons, a stance reiterated by Araqchi. He cautioned against the consequences of European powers invoking the UN "snapback" sanctions mechanism, stating that such an action would be "unlawful" or "illegitimate."
This stance was echoed by Araqchi, who dismissed the ability of European powers to invoke the UN "snapback" sanctions mechanism. According to him, this mechanism is part of an agreement from which the US withdrew, and thus other participants like Europe should not invoke it independently.
German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadephul confirmed the talks and warned Tehran that failure to reach a verifiable and sustainable agreement could trigger the UN "snapback" sanctions mechanism. Western nations have accused Iran of exploiting its nuclear program.
Araqchi, however, called the European powers "legally and morally unfit" to invoke the UN "snapback" sanctions mechanism. The negotiations come amidst ongoing tensions between Iran and the West over Iran's nuclear programme.
The negotiations are a significant step towards resolving these tensions and ensuring the peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear programme. The outcome of these talks will be closely watched by the international community.
