Negligent Parents Contributed to 15-Month-Old Girl's Death Trapped in a Hot Car, Sheriff Declares
In a tragic incident, a 15-month-old girl named Ariyanna Combs lost her life on the far west side of San Antonio. The exact location of the incident remains undisclosed.
The first person to notice Ariyanna's absence was an elementary-aged child. The couple's older children, who are in elementary school, are currently staying with a grandparent.
Investigators were able to reconstruct the timeline of events using video from a neighborhood camera and interviews with the parents. On Thursday afternoon, when temperatures reached over 100 degrees, Aaron Michael Combs and Shevetta Leandra Combs reportedly went inside their residence. Combs went to play video games, while Leandra Combs took a nap, leaving Ariyanna in the car for a two-hour timeframe.
Neighbours expressed shock and sadness about the incident in the neighbourhood. One neighbour stated that it was too hot for anyone to be outside for extended periods, especially in a car.
Initial charges against the parents, Combs and Leandra, were for negligent homicide. However, these have since been upgraded to injury to a child causing death, a second-degree felony. Each parent's bond has been set at $60,000.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar confirmed that Ariyanna was left in the vehicle for more than two hours. The couple's specific names are not publicly detailed, but they have been identified in news reports as the mother and stepfather.
The community mourns the loss of Ariyanna, and the investigation continues to gather more information about the unfortunate incident.
