In the wake of recent tensions along the border between Thailand and Cambodia, a proposal for a permanent border wall has gained traction. The idea was first put forward by Chief of Defence Forces Gen Songwit Noonpakdee.

The proposal has since been endorsed by Gen Prawit Wongsuwon, leader of the Palang Pracharath Party and former army chief. Gen Prawit emphasised the need for lasting safety for people living along the border, who should not have to endure repeated threats. He also claimed that he initiated the idea during his tenure as First Army Region commander.

Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, who is also Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, has stated that a permanent wall can only be built once both countries' territorial boundaries are clearly demarcated. This is to avoid exacerbating tensions and ensure that construction is feasible where boundaries are clear.

Mr. Phumtham further emphasised that dialogue must proceed first where territorial boundaries are unclear. He highlighted that the specific negotiations to clarify the borders take place through bilateral talks, but the exact location of these negotiations is not detailed in the available sources. The discussions continue even without formal Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs).

The urgency for action was underscored by Gen Prawit following a landmine blast in Surin that injured a sixth Thai soldier. He called for immediate government action to address the ongoing border issues.

It's worth noting that the idea of a permanent border wall is not a new one. It was previously proposed by Gen Songwit Noonpakdee. Gen Prawit reiterated that every inch of Thai soil must be defended.

However, the construction of a permanent border wall can only be considered once both countries' territorial boundaries are clearly demarcated, as stated by Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai. This underscores the importance of diplomatic dialogue and bilateral negotiations in resolving border disputes and ensuring lasting peace and security.
