NATO issues warning to German Eurofighter aircraft stationed in Romania
The German military has deployed Eurofighter combat aircraft to Romania as part of an around-the-clock alert rotation for NATO's Enhanced Air Policing South mission. This deployment, which began on September 1, 2025, and runs until February 28, 2026, is intended to help NATO partners bolster their military capabilities in regions where they lack sufficient resources.
The new German contingent, comprising five Eurofighters and approximately 170 soldiers, is joined by Italian and Spanish forces in this mission. The German Eurofighters are stationed at the Romanian military airbase Mihail Kogălniceanu near Constanța.
Recently, the German Eurofighters were put on a quick reaction alert due to Russian air strikes in the border region of Ukraine with Romania. However, the aircraft did not violate Romanian airspace during the incident overnight on Wednesday. They took off from the Romanian airbase and landed safely without incident.
The German Armed Forces spokesman confirmed that Russian weapon systems were approaching Romanian airspace, but the German Eurofighters were not involved in any specific incident. This was the first quick reaction alert of the new deployment.
NATO countries are taking turns providing support for the Enhanced Air Policing South mission, which involves armed protective flights over the southeastern flank of the alliance. The mission aims to ensure the safety and security of NATO member states and their territories.
This deployment is part of a broader effort by NATO to strengthen its collective defence and deter potential threats to its member states. The alliance continues to work closely with its partners to maintain peace and stability in the region.
