India is making strides in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, with Prime Minister Modi announcing a major program related to electric vehicles on August 26. The country's focus on exports could bring opportunities and pressure to auto companies, as they strive to keep pace with the global flow and ensure India's EV story resonates worldwide.
The Indian government's initiatives aim to boost the EV industry and promote sustainable transportation. This push is not just about numbers, but about signaling the country's intent to the international community. In line with this, India is now going to export electric vehicles to 100 countries worldwide.
Several auto companies are increasing their investment in research, design, and quality to meet international standards. One such example is the Mahindra XUV 400 EV, priced at ₹ 15.49 Lakhs, with an expected range of 456 km. Another notable entry is the Tata Altroz EV, priced between ₹ 12 - 15 Lakhs, offering a range of 306 km.
Auto companies with global operations may find policy support beneficial. This is evident in the case of Toyota, which participated jointly with India in a major electromobility program in a recent year. Toyota plans to focus on producing affordable hybrid cars in developing countries, starting with the Indian market, and collaborating with Suzuki for technology exchange and cost-efficient production.
The domestic market is also seeing new entries, such as the Maruti Suzuki Fronx EV, expected to cost ₹ 12 Lakhs, and the Tata Safari EV, priced between ₹ 26 - 30 Lakhs. For those looking forward to upcoming EV cars in India, there's also the Honda Elevate EV, priced at ₹ 18 Lakhs, and the Porsche Macan EV, priced at a premium ₹ 1.22 Cr, with an impressive expected range of 641 km.
Modi stated that strong fundamentals allow the country to redirect fast-flowing currents, and with India being the world's fastest-growing major economy, it seems the country is indeed ready to take on the global EV challenge.
