The Power System Vulnerability Index, a groundbreaking tool developed by researchers at Texas A&M University's Urban Resilience AI Lab, has identified several regions in the United States with high vulnerability in power systems.

The machine learning system, a product of research conducted in the Zachry Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, analyses data from over 179 million data points, sorted by time and location. The West Coast, East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes are among the regions with high vulnerability, according to the findings of the Power System Vulnerability Index.

The Power System Vulnerability Index studies the effect of weather events on the frequency and duration of nationwide power outages over the past 10 years. The data used for this analysis comes from the U.S. Department of Energy and Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Junwei Ma, a postdoctoral researcher involved in the development of the Power System Vulnerability Index, made a statement about the tool in a press release. "The Power System Vulnerability Index identifies areas of the country most at risk of power outages," Ma said.

The index not only identifies hotspots and annual rate trends of power outages but also highlights the West Coast, East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes as areas with high power system vulnerability. The research findings, as presented in the paper outlining the work of the Power System Vulnerability Index, indicate that these regions have high power system vulnerability.

The paper provides evidence that the West Coast, East Coast, Gulf of Mexico, and the Great Lakes have power systems with high vulnerability. It reveals that the vulnerability of power systems is high in these regions, offering valuable insights for policymakers and utility companies to address these issues and improve the resilience of power systems in these areas.
