Mystery Solved: Why Helicopters Are Circling Minsk at Night

Residents in Minsk have noticed low-flying helicopters circling the city at night in recent days. The unusual activity is part of an annual survey to check the city’s underground heating systems before the end of the heating season. The flights are carried out by a helicopter from Belarus’s Ministry of Emergency Situations. It scans for thermal anomalies along the heating mains, flying at heights of 500 to 600 metres. The schedule depends on weather conditions and is planned by specialists from the ministry.

Daytime traffic creates too much thermal interference on major roads, making accurate readings impossible. To avoid this, the surveys take place in the evening and at night. One resident, Yuri, recorded footage of the helicopter passing over Minsk’s Frunzensky District at 3 a.m.

Minskenergo conducts these aerial thermal imaging checks every year. The data helps identify issues in the underground infrastructure before the heating season concludes. The night-time flights will continue as part of the city’s maintenance routine. The collected data allows Minskenergo to detect and address potential faults in the heating network. Residents can expect the surveys to wrap up once the necessary information is gathered.
