AFGHANISTAN has earned the grim name 'graveyard of empires' for burying the ambitions of foreign invaders. Myanmar deserves the title 'graveyard of diplomats' because of the persistent failure of diplomacy to resolve a long-standing civil war. Over the decades, envoys, mediators and special representatives from the United Nations, ASEAN and other influential bodies have repeatedly tried to broker peace, only to see their efforts neutralised or exploited.

Myanmar’s long-running civil war has defied decades of diplomatic efforts, earning the country a grim reputation as a 'graveyard of diplomats'. The roots of this failure stretch back to 1948, when the assassination of General Aung San destroyed early hopes for unity and triggered waves of rebellion. Today, the conflict—especially in Rakhine State—remains a stark example of how entrenched domestic divisions and great power rivalries can paralyse international mediation.

The collapse of diplomacy in Myanmar began with the killing of General Aung San just months before independence. His death left a power vacuum that fuelled ethnic insurgencies and military dominance. Over time, foreign envoys and special representatives from major nations repeatedly tried to broker peace, only to see their efforts neutralised or exploited.

Myanmar’s civil war persists as a testament to the limits of diplomacy when faced with entrenched local conflicts and clashing international priorities. The military’s manipulation of negotiations, the ineffectiveness of divided global responses, and the failure of past agreements have left little room for progress. Without a shift in these dynamics, the country’s reputation as a 'tomb for diplomacy' is unlikely to change.
