Music academy in Latvia under legal scrutiny as suspended lecturer files lawsuit
In a recent turn of events, the former head of the Department of Music Technology at the prestigious JVLMA, Kronlaks, is seeking reinstatement after being suspended due to allegations of sexual harassment and emotional abuse.
Kronlaks, who is currently represented by the law firm "Smith & Partners," was in contact with an anonymous student for several years, a fact that was brought to light when correspondence between them in 2019 was made public.
The latest hearing in this ongoing dispute took place last Thursday in a courtroom, where both parties were present, albeit represented by their respective lawyers. The hearing, which lasted several hours, gave both sides an opportunity to present their case.
The allegations against Kronlaks have led to a criminal investigation by the State Police, with the focus on the alleged sexual harassment at the JVLMA.
A month prior to the hearing, Kronlaks was suspended, a move he believes to be unlawful. He has also stated that he intends to return to work at the academy if the court rules in his favour and reinstates him.
In addition to seeking reinstatement, Kronlaks has demanded compensation of approximately €8,000, which is the average earnings for the period of enforced absence.
Prior to the suspension, Kronlaks had been reprimanded by the Ethics Committee in February. However, Kronlaks, who is not a lawyer, has stated that he can't comment well on the legality of his reprimand and termination.
The next hearing in this case is scheduled for next week. The outcome could determine Kronlaks' future at the JVLMA and potentially set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
