Municipal construction project: The "Regenbogen" day care center, the first wooden building in the city
The municipality of Schönwalde-Glien has announced the construction of a new kindergarten named "Regenbogen" in Greifswald's Schönwalde I/Südstadt district. The project, starting on July 21, 2025, marks the third new construction in the ten-year history of the municipal operation Hanse-Kinder, following "Zwergenland" (2020) and "Tausend Farben" (2021).
The new kindergarten will be a modern facility, covering approximately 2,000 square meters and accommodating a total of 172 children. It will house 60 nursery and 112 kindergarten children. The construction will take place in two phases.
In the first phase, scheduled for completion by November 2026, modern group rooms for nursery and kindergarten children will be created. This phase will also see the implementation of sustainable building technology, including a photovoltaic system, green roofs, and a heat recovery ventilation system. The building is expected to meet the gold standard of the German Sustainable Building Council.
Upon the decision of the city council, formal certification has been waived. The building will be based on a wooden frame with solid wooden ceilings and a natural wooden facade, making it Greifswald's first municipal wooden building.
The kindergarten will offer retreat spaces and small group offerings to promote calm and concentration. It will also include a 100-square-meter sports room, a yoga room, a small sports field, and various movement offerings outdoors.
The second construction phase, planned for completion in November 2027, will begin in early 2027. This phase will include a single-story annex housing a sports room and a fresh kitchen with a dining hall.
Urban development funding contributes 3.67 million euros, and a special-purpose grant from the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern contributes approximately 1 million euros. The total costs for the new construction are approximately 10 million euros.
The old kindergarten will be demolished after the first construction phase. The "Regenbogen" kindergarten is set to provide a fresh kitchen aiming to improve the children's diet, positively influence their eating habits, and provide them with valuable experience in handling food.
This new addition to Greifswald's educational landscape is a testament to the municipality's commitment to sustainable, modern, and child-friendly facilities. The construction of the "Regenbogen" kindergarten is eagerly anticipated by the community, promising a brighter future for the city's youngest residents.
