Mumbai Introduces Electric Hydrofoil Ferries for Sustainable Transport

Mumbai, the bustling city home to over 23 million residents, is taking a significant step towards reducing road congestion and expanding sustainable transport options. The state government of Maharashtra, in partnership with local operator JalVimana and Swedish marine technology company Candela, is introducing a fleet of electric hydrofoil ferries.

The next-generation Candela P-12, considered a giant leap towards a sustainable future for India's coastline and inland waterways, is being brought to Mumbai by JalVimana. These ferries, equipped with hydrofoil technology, are designed to travel at high speeds while maintaining stability and passenger comfort, even in choppy conditions.

The new ferry programme is part of a broader state-led effort to utilise Mumbai's coastline and bay areas for high-capacity, low-emission commuting. The fleet will initially consist of 11 electric vessels, with plans for a larger network in the future.

Journey times on proposed routes, such as the airport-city centre route, are expected to be significantly reduced. Travel times, which currently take around 90 minutes by car, are expected to be cut to less than 30 minutes by water. Another proposed route will link Mumbai's forthcoming airport to the city centre.

The Candela P-12 ferries, currently operating in Stockholm, will be deployed on key routes in Mumbai, including journeys between the Gateway of India and Alibaug, and from the Gateway to Elephanta Island. The expansion of the electric ferry service is part of JalVimana's commitment to promoting sustainable transport options in Mumbai.

The hydrofoil technology featured in the Candela P-12 lifts the hull above the water, reducing drag, energy use, and noise while eliminating wake. This makes the ferries more energy-efficient and environmentally friendly.
