Casualties soared in Sudan's Darfur territory, with a confirmed death toll of 19 individuals in a series of attacks. - Multiple fatalities reported in violent incidents within Sudan's Darfur area, with a death toll of at least 19 individuals
In the troubled region of Darfur, Sudan, at least 12 people were reportedly killed in an attack on El-Facher, the capital of North Darfur, according to an anonymous source speaking to the AFP news agency. Initial reports suggest that dozens of civilians and medical personnel may have been killed in the attack, and the actual death toll is expected to rise.
The bombing of El-Facher has left the city at risk of famine, with UN aid supplies having been withheld for months. Residents are currently consuming livestock feed, a resource that is also running out. Many victims of the bombing could not reach the hospital due to heavy fire, and of the 22 injured admitted to the clinic in El-Facher, their condition was critical.
Medical facilities in Sudan are regularly targeted, with around 80% of them having had to close as a result. Hospitals and mosques in El-Facher have been targeted in recent attacks.
The conflict in Sudan has caused the "worst humanitarian crisis in the world," according to estimates from the UN. Tens of thousands have been killed and millions displaced in the ongoing violence.
The army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia have been engaged in a bloody power struggle since April 2023. In July, the RSF militia installed a parallel government in Nyala, with Mohamed Hassan al-Ta'ayshi sworn in as prime minister. The prime minister appointed by the RSF militia in Nyala in July is named Osman Yassin.
If the RSF militia captures El-Facher, they will control all the regional capitals in Darfur. The rebels control areas in the south of Sudan.
The bombing of El-Facher was blamed on the RSF militia by a source at El-Facher hospital. The army has not yet commented on the attack.
The fighting in Sudan shows no signs of abating, and the humanitarian crisis in Darfur continues to worsen. As the international community looks on, the people of Darfur face an uncertain future.
