Multiple fatalities and approximately 100 injuries resulted from a train crash in Egypt
Train Crash in Egypt Leaves Three Dead and Over 100 Injured
A tragic accident has struck Egypt's outdated railway network, as a train crash between Alexandria and Marsa Matrouh has resulted in at least three fatalities and over 100 injuries. The Egyptian Health Ministry has described the incident as a "tragic accident".
The state railway authority reported that two of the seven carriages overturned in the accident, with photos showing the carriages in a ditch. The train derailed on a route known for Egypt's outdated and poorly maintained railway network, which spans around 10,000 kilometers, making it one of the oldest in Africa and the Middle East.
The railway company operating the train involved in the accident is part of Egypt's neglected railway network, with inadequate training of train personnel sometimes cited as a cause of not infrequent accidents. Long-overdue repair work has been delayed on the network, contributing to its poor condition.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred on Egypt's railway network. In 2002, one of the worst train accidents in Egypt took place, resulting in over 360 deaths in a fire on a train.
In response to the accident, thirty ambulances were dispatched to treat the injured and transport them to hospitals.
It's worth noting that Egypt has taken action against tourism companies after over 1,000 deaths during the Hajj. However, the focus now shifts to addressing the safety concerns on the nation's railway network.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for infrastructure improvements and safety measures to ensure the well-being of passengers using Egypt's railway network.
