Multiple Accidents at the Cycling Event Organized by Riderman Result in Approximately 70 Injuries
In a shocking turn of events, the 25th edition of the "Rideman" amateur cycling race in southern Germany was marred by a massive crash near Bad Dürkheim in Baden-Württemberg.
The incident occurred on the downhill section of the course on the K5705 between Bad Dürkheim and Biesingen, in a left-hand curve, where too many riders entered the curve simultaneously. The crash, which involved a large number of cyclists, saw participants falling onto the roadway, one after the other, as described by eyewitnesses.
The exact number of injured participants could not be provided by police as of the afternoon, but it is estimated that up to 70 participants were severely injured and up to 35 sustained minor injuries. Four rescue helicopters and numerous ambulances were at the scene to provide immediate assistance.
The crash disrupted the race, with all racing events being cancelled by the organizer and the ongoing races being stopped and ended. The organization hosting the "Riderman" race is the team around Rik Sauser, linked with Team Strassacker, which has been involved for 25 years. The 25th edition of Riderman was scheduled for September 5 to 7, 2025, in Bad Dürrheim and surrounding areas.
Despite the safety measures in place, the risk of falling is inherent in cycling and "cannot be completely eliminated," according to race officials. An external influence on the race is ruled out by police.
Today's stage was 90.8 kilometers long and attracted hundreds of participants, making it one of the most popular amateur cycling races in southern Germany. This year's "Riderman" saw 1,079 riders starting.
The "Riderman" race has been a staple in the cycling community for 25 years, with a rich history and a reputation for challenging courses and a vibrant atmosphere. The organisers will no doubt be working hard to ensure the safety of all participants in future events.
