Müller debuts in the starting lineup, scoring late for Vancouver's win
Thomas Müller Scores Dramatic Winner on Debut for Vancouver Whitecaps
In a thrilling encounter in Vancouver, Thomas Müller scored the winning goal in stoppage time to secure a 3-2 victory for the Whitecaps against St. Louis City SC.
The 2014 World Cup winner made his starting lineup debut for the Whitecaps and almost scored with a header just two minutes into the game, but it went narrowly wide of the goal. Müller, who captained his team, stood out in his performance, often being looked to as a passing option by his teammates. Although some of his ideas didn't always work, he set up many Whitecaps attacks.
The match began with Eduard Löwen scoring the first goal for St. Louis City SC in the 14th minute. However, Ben White equalized for the Whitecaps in stoppage time of the first half (45.+4), converting a penalty. João Klauss put St. Louis back in the lead (2-1) in the 73rd minute.
But the Whitecaps refused to give up. Daniel Ríos equalized for them in the 79th minute, setting the stage for Müller's dramatic winner in the 94th minute. He converted a penalty against Roman Bürki, who was among several Bundesliga-experienced professionals starting for St. Louis City SC.
Müller, clearly delighted, raved about scoring the winning goal right in front of the Whitecaps' fans. The victory marked a promising start for Müller in his new chapter with the Whitecaps.
