Online Champion from New Jersey Gone Too Soon

The poker world is grieving the loss of one of its brightest stars: Dan Sewnig, known online by the aliases mj23style and RedsoxNets5, passed away at the age of 33. News of his death broke on August 13, 2024, and quickly spread across social media, sparking an outpouring of sorrow, memories, and support.

From $5 Sit-and-Gos to the WSOP Spotlight

Dan began his poker journey at just 11 years old, inspired by his cousin and Chris Moneymaker’s iconic 2003 win. What started as friendly games for small stakes grew into a lifelong passion. He later attended Ramapo College in New Jersey, earning degrees in mathematics and education β€” but instead of teaching, he chose the grind of professional poker.

When legal online poker launched in New Jersey, Dan quickly rose to prominence, becoming one of the state’s top players and earning over $1 million in online winnings.

WSOP Success and Industry Recognition

In 2022, Dan won a WSOP Circuit ring, taking home $12,107. He also made deep runs in the WSOP Main Event, finishing 79th in 2021 ($81,000) and 112th in 2022 ($62,500). Known for his thoughtful and strategic approach, he shared insights into the mental game in interviews with PokerNews, discussing how to cope with losses and stay motivated through the highs and lows of tournament life.

A Kind Soul Remembered

Friends and fellow pros remember Dan not only as a brilliant player but as a genuinely kind, generous, and positive human being. Player Asher Conniff described him as β€œone of the nicest guys you could ever meet,” while Matt Paoletti noted the warmth he brought to everyone around him.

Condolences poured in from across the poker world, including from Christian Harder, Daniel Strelitz, Jeff Stellwagen, Mike Holtz, Ryan Feldman, and Chris Hunichen.

A Legacy That Lives On

Dan Sewnig will be remembered not only for his poker results, but for the atmosphere he created at every table β€” filled with integrity, humor, and heart. His impact on the poker community goes far beyond cashes and trophies; it's in the people he touched and the example he set.

Rest in peace, champion.
