In a shocking incident that occurred on Monday evening, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) motorcycle officer was involved in a crash with a Tesla Model Y on southbound Interstate Highway 280 near Portola Valley.

The collision took place at around 1:40 AM, just south of the Alpine Road exit. According to Caltrans, all lanes on southbound Highway 280 were open by 8:30 p.m., but the incident caused significant traffic delays earlier in the day.

The CHP officer was conducting a traffic break with emergency lights flashing when the Tesla failed to yield, colliding with the motorcycle. As a result, the officer was ejected from the motorcycle and sustained major injuries that were not life-threatening. The officer is currently being treated at a local hospital, but their identity has not been publicly disclosed.

The driver of the Tesla remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation. It is not yet clear whether the Tesla was being driven with its Autopilot driver assistance system.

The crash was prompted by a report of a leaf blower on the roadway, which may have distracted the driver or caused them to fail to notice the CHP officer's emergency lights.

The investigation of the crash resulted in the closure of the three left lanes on southbound Highway 280. Only the No. 4 lane was available during the investigation, causing traffic delays.

Carlos E. Castanฬƒeda, a senior editor of news and social media for the Bay Area, reported on the incident. This unfortunate event serves as a reminder for all drivers to remain vigilant and attentive, especially when approaching emergency vehicles on the road.
