The ongoing conflict in Ukraine, now in its fourth year, continues to be a source of tension between Russia and the European Union (EU). The destructive war, led by Russia, has seen key defensive cities like Sloviansk and Kramatorsk held by Ukraine, while Russian forces control around 99.7% of the Luhansk region and 79% of the Donetsk region, according to Russian Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov. These figures, however, remain unverifiable.

Russia's Chief of Staff recently announced the continuation of the Russian invasion of Ukraine with new objectives for a fall offensive. This decision has been met with criticism from the EU, who accuse Russia of using stalling tactics to gain time for new attacks through the prospect of negotiations and new deadlines.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected Russia's demand for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from certain areas, including Donetsk. This rejection has led to threats from Russia to capture Sloviansk and Kramatorsk if Ukraine does not comply with their demands.

The current position of the European Union on supporting peace negotiations in the Ukraine conflict emphasizes that any peace agreement must include Ukraine itself and respect its vital security interests. The EU rejects any peace dictated without Ukraine's participation or involving territorial concessions forced by Russia. Instead, they insist on robust security guarantees for Ukraine, backed by the US and Europe, while maintaining strong military and financial support for Ukrainian defense.

However, Russia's rejection of NATO representatives is a recent development, with Moscow criticizing European plans to send troops to Ukraine to secure a potential future peace. Russian negotiator Kirill Dmitriev has accused Europeans of prolonging the conflict by making unrealistic demands.

As the conflict continues, both sides remain firm in their positions, with no signs of a resolution in sight. The EU's commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity stands in stark contrast to Russia's demands for territorial concessions, creating a complex and volatile situation in Eastern Europe.
