More trees destroyed in Rhine region's Neuss, specifically 500 this time
In the picturesque district of Rhein-Kreis Neuss, a significant milestone has been reached in the fight against climate change. The "1000 Trees for Climate Protection" campaign, organised by the environmental organisation BUND (Bund fΓΌr Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland), has now been completed.
The distribution of these climate trees received praise from citizens, as they not only beautify their surroundings but also contribute to the protection of urban climate and biodiversity. Udo Holtmann, one of the recipients of a free climate tree, expressed his delight, stating, "Having a tree in my garden not only improves the aesthetic appeal but also contributes to the overall well-being of our environment."
Gregor Kupper, the environmental officer of Rhein-Kreis Neuss, led the distribution efforts, accompanied by Axel Kriegler, Bernd Lufen, and apprentice Daniel Rubin Santos. The team distributed a variety of fruit tree species, including apple, pear, cherry, plum, quince, medlar, serviceberry, and amber trees, at four locations across the district.
The distribution of these trees is particularly timely, as severe drought, heat, and subsequent pest infestations have resulted in significant tree losses in residential areas. These climate trees, however, are resilient and are expected to withstand such adverse conditions, helping to at least partially offset these functional losses.
Trees are vital for our planet, providing not only aesthetic appeal but also essential oxygen and absorbing climate-damaging CO2. They improve the urban climate and quality of life, making our cities more livable and breathable. Moreover, they serve as habitats for numerous animal species, contributing to the rich biodiversity of our surroundings.
Replanting trees in private gardens can be a simple yet effective way for individuals to contribute to climate protection efforts. As Gregor Kupper aptly put it, "Every tree counts. By planting a tree in your garden, you are not only enhancing your personal space but also making a significant contribution to the health of our planet."
As the climate trees continue to grow and thrive in the gardens of Neuss, we can look forward to a greener, cleaner, and more biodiverse future.
