Montenegro Aims for Admission to Bloc During Latvian Leadership of EU Council, According to Braze Report
In a recent meeting between the Latvian Foreign Minister and the Montenegrin Deputy Prime Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, the two officials discussed a range of topics related to security, the international agenda, and economic cooperation.
The meeting, which took place recently, focused primarily on the situation in the Middle East and the role of both countries in maintaining regional and global security. Both nations, as members of NATO, emphasised their commitment to a strong and united response to the challenges they face.
The meeting did not result in any new statements regarding Latvia viewing Montenegro as an important ally in NATO, or Montenegro's aim to join the European Union during the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2028. These points have been previously stated.
However, Montenegro did reaffirm its intention to join the European Union during the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2028. Latvia, for its part, supports a criteria-based EU enlargement and believes Montenegro is currently 100% compliant with the EU's foreign and security policy.
The discussion also touched on economic cooperation and business opportunities between the two countries. Montenegro's Deputy Prime Minister, Ivanovic, emphasised the potential for further development of bilateral investment and trade, with a focus on bringing together chambers of commerce and business communities.
Ivanovic also discussed the importance of cooperation between Latvia and Montenegro in the context of NATO. This includes the role of Montenegrin and Latvian armed forces in NATO missions and potential contributions to defense capabilities.
The meeting did not address Montenegro's compliance with EU foreign and security policy, as this was previously established. Nor did it discuss Montenegro's progress in closing chapters of the EU accession negotiations, as this was previously mentioned.
In a show of gratitude, the Montenegrin Deputy Prime Minister thanked Latvia for its support, both on the political and expert level, in helping Montenegro on its path to EU membership. This support comes at a crucial time, as Montenegro has closed many chapters of the EU accession negotiations.
Austria, represented by Chancellor Christian Stocker, has also shown support for Montenegro's intention to join the EU during Lithuania's Council presidency in 2028, with comprehensive assistance pledged for Montenegro's EU accession process.
In conclusion, the meeting between the Latvian and Montenegrin leaders was a productive one, focusing on security, economic cooperation, and Montenegro's path to EU membership. Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to working together in the face of regional and global challenges.
