Monsoon rains flood risks escalate in Peshawar, while the crisis in Punjab continues to intensify in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

The flood situation in Pakistan is evolving, with various regions facing the brunt of the ongoing monsoon rains. Here's a summary of the latest developments:

Chenab River

The water level at Trimmu on the Chenab has fallen to 426,964 cusecs, a reversal from its previous rise. However, a flood wave from the Chenab is expected to reach Multan via the Trimmu Headworks by Tuesday night, causing concern for the city's safety. The Chenab at Head Muhammad Wala continues to rise, nearing its danger mark of 417.50 ft.

Peshawar and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Residential areas of Peshawar city, the capital of KP, are at risk of being inundated due to high-level flooding. The water level at Budhni Nullah on the outskirts of Peshawar city has reached 16,142 cusecs. The PDMA in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong gusty winds across much of the province. Authorities have cautioned that windstorms and lightning could damage weak structures, electric poles, billboards, vehicles, and solar panels.

Rescue teams and local administration are on high alert in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The NDMA advises residents of low-lying areas to take protective measures, while farmers have been advised to manage agricultural activities accordingly, and residents and tourists have been asked to avoid travel in high-risk zones.

Multan

The situation in Multan could become critical, according to PDMA Punjab Director General Irfan Ali Kathia. He stated that the next four to six hours are very important for Multan, as torrential rains could generate flash floods in local streams and rivers, trigger urban flooding in low-lying areas, and cause landslides in vulnerable hilly areas.

Affected Areas and People

So far, 3,243 villages have been affected, and approximately 2.4 million people have been affected in some form or the other.
