Moldovan Pro-Russian politician faces imprisonment due to sentencing

In a strong rebuke, the Russian government has condemned the sentencing of pro-Russian Moldovan politician Evghenia Gutul, describing it as a politically motivated act and an example of repression against opposition ahead of Moldova’s September parliamentary elections.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov called the verdict "open and arguably unlawful pressure on political opponents," accusing the Moldovan authorities of suppressing democratic norms and preventing voters from supporting pro-Russian candidates. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, went as far as to call the verdict a "disgrace" and a "calamity" for Moldova and its people.

Evghenia Gutul, a critic of Moldova’s pro-EU government, was found guilty of illegal party financing for the "Shor" party, a political move that has been seen by the Russian government and analysts as part of a larger Kremlin strategy to pressure Moldova politically and destabilize the country before the elections.

The "Shor" party is named after exiled pro-Moscow oligarch Ilan Shor. During Gutul's arrest, her supporters shouted "shame" and "down with Maia Sandu" (Moldova's President). In a post on Telegram, Gutul denounced the verdict as "political reprisal" and "an attempt to intimidate the residents of Gagauzia who have the courage to vote against the ruling party's wishes."

The autonomous region of Gagauzia, governed by Gutul and a traditional pro-Russian stronghold, is expected to see bolstered protests and unrest in the wake of the sentencing. The Gagauzian People’s Assembly and Executive Committee have rejected the sentence as illegal and politically motivated, reaffirming Gutul’s legitimacy and vowing to defend Gagauzia’s autonomy both nationally and internationally.

The ruling against Gutul comes ahead of parliamentary elections set to be held on September 28. The Kremlin has emphasized systematic opposition suppression in Moldova and accused the pro-European government of inciting anti-Russian sentiment. Russian media have portrayed Gutul as a “martyr of the Russian world” oppressed by the West.

Moldova regularly warns of Russian interference with its domestic politics, and the pro-EU side is currently in power. However, the Kremlin's allegations of political pressure and destabilization have raised concerns about the fairness of the upcoming elections and the future of Moldova's political landscape.
