In the heart of Lisbon, a tragic incident occurred on Wednesday, as the Elevador da Glória, a popular tourist attraction, suffered an accident that claimed 16 lives and left dozens more injured. The victims were of various nationalities, including Portuguese, South Koreans, Swiss, British, Canadians, Ukrainians, Americans, and French nationals.

The Elevador da Glória, a 265-meter-long structure linking Praça dos Restauradores to Jardim de São Pedro de Alcântara, was the site of this devastating event.

In the wake of the tragedy, the socialist leader, José Luís Carneiro, did not make any comments about the politicization of the incident in the first paragraph. Instead, he demanded explanations, clarification of responsibilities, and respect for others following the accident.

Meanwhile, the PSD mayor, Carlos Moedas, found himself at the centre of controversy. He was interviewed on SIC after the accident, where he criticized the politicization of the tragedy. However, his comments were not limited to the incident itself. Carlos Moedas's insults were previously directed at Alexandra Leitao, Pedro Nuno Santos, and Eurico Brilhante Dias, who are socialist politicians.

The socialist leader accused Carlos Moedas of running away from the Elevador da Glória accident, while Alexandra Leitao, a socialist politician, accused Moedas of making an exercise in self-exoneration regarding the incident on social media. Carlos Moedas, in response, accused Leitao of being cynical and deceitful in her role regarding the Elevador da Glória accident.

The Government declared a national day of mourning, which was observed on Thursday, while the Lisbon Chamber declared three days of municipal mourning, from Thursday to Saturday.

Pedro Nuno Santos, the former Secretary General of the Socialist Party and former opposition leader, was the person who called Moedas "very cynical, fraudulent" in relation to his comments on the Elevador da Glória accident. Santos demanded Moedas's resignation amid public criticism following the accident.

José Luís Carneiro considered it surprising that Carlos Moedas insulted these socialist politicians. Despite this, Moedas believes it is not appropriate to use such language to overcome the mistake he made four years ago when he demanded the dismissal of Fernando Medina.

The Elevador da Glória accident resulted in 22 injuries, in addition to the 16 deaths previously mentioned. As the city of Lisbon and the nation mourn, the investigation into the cause of the accident continues.
