Ultramodern reinvention of the 1.44MB floppy disk: a contemporary casing for SD cards, boasting countless terabytes of memory storage capacity.

Modern take transforms the 1.44MB floppy disk into a contemporary storage container, designed to house today's SD cards capable of terabytes of data storage.

In a delightful blend of the past and present, Indian industrial designer Ayushmaan Singh Jodha has created a design concept for SanDisk that reimagines the iconic 3.5-inch floppy disk as a case for today's SD cards. This innovative design, published via Yanko Design, aims to bridge eras of technology in a fun and practical way.

The design incorporates fun artwork that references glitch aesthetics, retro computing, early computer culture, and retro sci-fi themes. The packaging adopts the square profile and iconic shutter of the floppy disk, providing a nostalgic feel as you slide open the shutter to reveal the hidden compartment where the SD card is stored.

While a floppy disk once held a mere 1.44MB, this design protects cards that now carry gigabytes or even terabytes. The intention is not just to safeguard these valuable storage devices, but also to make them collectible items for creatives to display, rather than hide in drawers.

The floppy case provides a larger, sturdier object to hold onto, making it easier to keep track of the tiny SD cards. This is particularly useful as SD cards can easily get lost, slipping out of pockets, hiding beneath clutter, or disappearing into travel bags.

Interestingly, while the German navy has decided to phase out the use of floppy disks, the floppy disk has resurfaced in unusual places, including the American prison service. And, remarkably, an enterprising YouTuber has even built a floppy disk from scratch.

Despite the advancements in technology, it seems that the floppy disk is not quite ready to disappear just yet. According to reports, floppy disks are expected to persist beyond 2025, among other obsolete technologies.

With large SD cards currently available for purchase, this design concept offers a unique and fun solution to the problem of keeping track of SD cards. Whether you're a collector, a tech enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates a bit of nostalgia, this floppy disk-inspired SD card packaging is definitely worth a look.
