Mobilizing Tens of Thousands of Reservists by Israel in Preparation for a Potential Gaza Military Operation

In the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, the situation in Gaza continues to escalate. According to Gaza health officials, over 62,000 Palestinians have lost their lives since the start of Israel's campaign.

The war, which began on Oct 7, 2023, has resulted in the death of over 1,200 people, mainly civilians, and the taking of 251 hostages. The conflict has displaced millions, with most Gazans now living in densely packed areas along the Mediterranean coast after being displaced multiple times.

Widespread devastation has occurred across the Gaza Strip, affecting about 2.3 million Palestinians. Many buildings, including homes, schools, and mosques, have been destroyed during the campaign.

Israel's military now controls about 75% of Gaza, and Hamas has been reduced to a guerrilla force. The Israeli military accuses Hamas of operating from within civilian infrastructure, a claim that has led to civilian casualties.

Hamas, which has ruled Gaza for almost two decades, has been severely weakened by the war. In a bid to bring about a ceasefire, Hamas has accepted a proposal for a 60-day ceasefire, which involves releasing some hostages and freeing Palestinian prisoners in Israel.

Egypt and Qatar are acting as mediators in the negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza, while the USA also acts as an international mediator alongside them. Israel's security cabinet has approved a plan to expand the campaign in Gaza, with the aim of seizing Gaza City. The operation will involve five divisions operating in the Gaza enclave.

Israeli officials have stated that evacuation orders will be issued to Gaza City residents before any force move. However, the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem has received reports of evacuation notices in neighborhoods near Gaza City's only Catholic Church, causing fear and uncertainty among the residents.

Israeli authorities believe that 20 hostages are still alive, and the Israeli military is hopeful that the ceasefire will lead to their safe release. Samir Abu Basel, a father of four from Gaza, expressed fear about the future due to the ongoing conflict, hoping for a peaceful resolution that ensures the safety and well-being of his family and the people of Gaza.

In a positive development, Israeli military officials have announced that most reservists are not expected to serve in combat in Gaza City. The military official has stated that reserve soldiers will not report for duty until September, indicating a potential de-escalation of the conflict in the near future.

The ongoing conflict in Gaza continues to take a heavy toll on the civilian population, with no end in sight. As negotiations for a ceasefire continue, the international community is urging both sides to prioritize the protection of civilians and work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
