Mobile carrier Vodafone inaugurates a new cellular facility in Wangels
In a move aimed at boosting the local economy and job creation, telecommunications giant Vodafone has announced plans to expand its mobile network in the Holstein region of Germany. The focus of this expansion offensive is to enhance the existing mobile network and bring the latest technology to more residents.
The next concrete plan for a 5G upgrade is in the municipality of Neustadt in Holstein, where a new antenna will be installed. This is part of Vodafone's broader strategy to roll out 5G across the region.
In a statement, Tanja Richter, Vodafone's technical director, highlighted the importance of mobile network expansion for meeting the strong demand from the population for mobile data services. She emphasised that this expansion is not just about providing faster internet speeds, but also about ensuring that everyone has access to essential services like emergency calls and disaster alerts.
The new antennas support the latest variants of the emergency call technology AML and the catastrophe warning system Cell Broadcast. AML automatically transmits the location of the caller to the emergency control center when calling the "112" emergency number, ensuring quick and effective responses in emergencies. Cell Broadcast, on the other hand, warns the surrounding population via smartphone about danger situations such as large fires, gas explosions, or floods.
Residents of the municipalities of Stockelsdorf and Neustadt in Holstein will be the first to benefit from these network expansions. In other locations, larger network capacities will be created by installing additional antennas for LTE and 5G at existing three locations.
Vodafone has already put a new mobile network station into operation in Wangels, eliminating a gap in mobile broadband coverage. 70 of these stations also have the broadband technology 5G on board. The remaining 18 stations that are still broadcasting without 5G will be gradually upgraded and converted to 5G locations.
Vodafone's 5G network currently reaches over 90% of the population in Germany, making it one of the leading communications companies in the country. The company generates an annual turnover of approximately 13 billion euros with around 15,000 employees.
Four more mobile network construction projects are planned in the district by mid-2026, aiming to further expand the mobile data highways. Vodafone currently operates 88 mobile network stations in the district, of which 87 are equipped with the mobile broadband technology LTE.
The new LTE station enables emergency calls and warnings of catastrophes, while Vodafone's machine network (Narrowband IoT) covers over 97% of German territory for industry and business. This network is essential for connecting machines and devices, enabling the Internet of Things (IoT) to thrive in Germany.
Vodafone Germany is not just a communications company; it is a vital connection between people and machines, families and friends, politics, economy, and society. The company's expansion in Holstein is a testament to its commitment to providing essential services to as many people as possible, while also driving economic growth and job creation.
