Mob of bullies triumphantly celebrates attendance of over three million cinema-attendees
In a celebratory post on Instagram, director Michael Bully Herbig marked the milestone of 3 million cinema tickets sold for his Western comedy, "The Canoe of Manitu." This achievement places the film as the most successful German production since "The Perfect Secret" in 2019.
"The Canoe of Manitu" is currently the only other film in 2025, besides "Lilo & Stitch," to attract more than 3 million people. However, it still has a long way to go to catch up with "The Shoe of Manitu," which sold over 11 million cinema tickets in 2001 and earned a "Golden Screen with 2 stars."
The film has been awarded the "Golden Screen" by the Association of German Film Theatres (HDF), but it is only the third film to receive this award this year. "The Canoe of Manitu" had to relinquish the top spot in the German cinema charts to "Conjuring 4" for the first time in its fourth weekend, but it remains the number one film at the box office with around 3.2 million visitors after the fourth weekend in cinemas.
"Conjuring 4" has achieved the best start of a horror film outside the USA, while "The Minecraft Movie" remains the most successful film of the year in Germany with 3.5 million tickets sold. "The Canoe of Manitu" could overtake "The Minecraft Movie" as early as next weekend, but it would need to maintain its current rate of ticket sales for several more weeks to do so.
As the box office success of "The Canoe of Manitu" in the coming weeks can be determined primarily from its strong opening, its current ranking as the third most successful German film of the year, and ongoing comparisons to "The Minecraft Movie," it remains to be seen if the film will continue to break records and solidify its place in German cinema history.
