The Golden Dome Missile Defense System: A Multi-Billion Dollar Project to Protect the United States

The Trump administration has unveiled plans for a new missile defense system, dubbed the Golden Dome, designed to safeguard the U.S. against a variety of threats. The system, inspired by Israel's Iron Dome but significantly larger, is set to be a multi-layered shield, costing an estimated $175 billion initially with potential future costs reaching up to $542 billion over 20 years.

The Golden Dome system will consist of four integrated layers: a space-based sensing and targeting layer, three land-based layers, and one satellite-based layer. A new large missile field for Next Generation Interceptors (NGI), made by Lockheed Martin, is revealed in the presentation, joining the existing Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Aegis systems.

The land-based layers will comprise missile interceptors, radar arrays, and potentially lasers. The system does not currently have a vehicle that can handle the heat of reentry while targeting an enemy missile, highlighting the need for space-based interceptors that can more quickly intercept incoming missiles.

The modular and relocatable systems are designed to minimize reliance on prepared sites, allowing for rapid deployment across multiple theaters. The location of the new missile field is suggested to be in the Midwest, according to a map contained in the presentation.

Space Force General Michael Guetlein, confirmed to lead the Golden Dome project, has been given a tight timeline. He has 30 days to build a team, another 60 days to deliver an initial system design, and 120 days to present a full implementation plan.

Notably, the project's contractors include Lockheed, Northrop Grumman, RTX, and Boeing, but not SpaceX or Palantir. However, the Pentagon is gathering information from various sources for the Golden Dome project, but has not yet released more detailed information due to the early stages of the program.

The U.S. is planning to add a third GMD launch site in the Midwest to counter additional threats. The goal is to shoot targets down during their "boost phase," the slow and predictable climb through the Earth's atmosphere of a missile.

Congress has already appropriated $25 billion for the Golden Dome in Trump's tax-and-spend bill passed in July, and another $45.3 billion is earmarked for the Golden Dome in his 2026 presidential budget request. The system aims to be operational by 2028, providing a significant boost to U.S. missile defense capabilities.
