Military forces of Israel declare Gaza as a "humanitarian area"
The Israeli army has announced its plans for a military operation against Hamas in the city of Gaza, with preparations already underway. The army spokesperson made the statements, though the exact date for the intervention remains unspecified as of now.
In anticipation of the impending offensive, the Israeli army has been targeting the Islamic Hamas in northern and central Gaza. Meanwhile, the army spokesperson has urged residents of Gaza in northern Gaza to move to the Al-Mawasi area as soon as possible.
The Al-Mawasi region, located near Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, has been designated a "humanitarian zone" by the Israeli army. This region is significant as it houses vital humanitarian infrastructure such as field hospitals, water pipelines, and desalination plants.
However, the capacities of the field clinics in the Al-Mawasi region are inadequate given the large number of people expected to seek refuge there. Moreover, UN organizations have reported insufficient provision of latrines, communal toilets, and waste disposal facilities in the region.
As of June this year, the Al-Mawasi region is overcrowded, with approximately 425,000 people living in vast tent camps on an area of about nine square kilometers. This represents a significant increase from the less than 100,000 people who have left the city of Gaza so far due to the impending offensive.
The estimated population of the city of Gaza is nearly a million people, making the potential displacement a significant humanitarian concern. The Israeli army's declaration of the Al-Mawasi area as a humanitarian zone in December 2023 aims to provide a safe haven for those fleeing the conflict.
Despite the challenges, humanitarian aid is being delivered to the Al-Mawasi region to meet the growing needs of the displaced population. It is crucial that adequate resources are provided to ensure the safety and well-being of those seeking refuge in the humanitarian zone.
The Israeli military has intensified air strikes recently, indicating a corresponding offensive in the city of Gaza is imminent. However, no publicly available information specifies an exact date for the planned Israeli military intervention against Hamas in the northern Gaza coastal area as of now.
