Military authorities seek to have Reservists undergo MAD evaluations prior to service commencement.

The German Armed Forces have been utilizing between 16,000 and 18,000 reservists each year, but concerns about right-wing extremism have prompted calls for increased security checks and potential email monitoring.

Since 2017, the security checks for applicants who want to join the German Armed Forces have been automatic. However, only those reservists who move up to security-sensitive posts are currently subject to such checks. This has led to a call for comprehensive security checks for all reservists, similar to those for new recruits.

Eva Högl, the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces and a member of the SPD political party, has advocated for this change. She has suggested that the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) should be tasked with the security checks for reservists before they are called up for service.

However, the responsibilities for email monitoring of reservists have not been clearly defined between domestic intelligence agencies and the MAD, according to Högl. She has also not provided publicly specific detailed directives regarding the review of reservists by the MAD before their deployment in the German Armed Forces.

The call for email monitoring stems from several recent cases of right-wing extremism among reservists. However, it's unclear how many of these reservists have email accounts, and the email monitoring for reservists has not been implemented yet.

Eva Högl has emphasised that not enough has been done to address this issue so far, and she has suggested that the MAD should be responsible for monitoring email communication of reservists. She has also expressed concern that the current lack of comprehensive security checks for reservists could pose a risk to the German Armed Forces.

As the German Armed Forces continue to rely on reservists, these calls for increased security measures and potential email monitoring will likely remain a topic of discussion and debate.
