Military announces Gaza City as combat zone; returns bodies of two hostages from Israel
In a sobering development, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) has declared that Gaza City is experiencing famine. This dire situation is a result of fighting, Israel's blockade on aid, widespread displacement, and the collapse of food production.
The United Nations predicts that Gaza could lose half of its hospital bed capacity if Israel invades, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. The IPC analysis concluded that these factors are the primary causes of the famine.
Hunger, starvation, and child malnutrition have surpassed the thresholds necessary to declare famine in Gaza City. The situation is so dire that even basic necessities like food and medicine are becoming scarce.
Amidst this crisis, Israel has recovered the bodies of two hostages previously held by Hamas in Gaza. One of the bodies has been identified as Ilan Weiss of Kibbutz Be'eri. The identity of the second body remains unknown, according to available reports.
The recovery of these hostages has raised tensions, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowing to continue the campaign to return all hostages. He said, "We will not rest until all hostages are returned, both the living and the dead."
The Hostages and Missing Families Forum has organized mass protests demanding a ceasefire to return hostages. The suspension of the pause applies to Gaza City, Deir al-Balah, and Muwasi, where hundreds of thousands of displaced people are sheltering.
The suspension comes as Israel prepares to widen its offensive in Gaza City. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) consider Gaza City a Hamas stronghold, with a network of tunnels in use by militants. The IDF has suspended mid-day pauses allowing the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza City, calling it a "dangerous combat zone."
The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has expressed concern over Israel's preparation for a large-scale ground offensive. The spokesperson for the NRC, Shaina Low, stated that intensified military operations will further hinder their ability to respond. She emphasized that the suspension of the pauses for aid delivery is making an already difficult situation even more challenging.
In the midst of this complex and evolving situation, the international community is urged to intervene and help alleviate the suffering of the people of Gaza City. The future looks uncertain, but hope remains that a peaceful resolution can be found to end the violence and provide relief to those in need.
