Migrants Perish Off the Coast of İzmir: Report from Coast Guard

In recent days, the Mediterranean Sea has once again become a dangerous crossing for migrants seeking refuge in Europe.

On August 18, at least four migrants lost their lives after falling into the sea off the coast of the Karaburun district in İzmir, Turkey. The exact number of migrants on the boat is unknown, but two were rescued and a search is ongoing for more missing individuals. The incident involved a rubber dinghy, according to the Coast Guard command's statement.

The nationality of the migrants is not specified, but it is believed that they were mainly Afghan and Syrian refugees attempting to cross the Aegean Sea. The search and rescue operation is being conducted with the help of a helicopter, drone, five boats, and a larger vessel.

Meanwhile, in Greece, the government is preparing draft legislation that could have significant implications for migrants whose asylum claims are denied. The proposed legislation would mandate imprisonment for these migrants during a 30-day compliance period before deportation. Additionally, the government would require the use of ankle monitors during this period. This draft legislation is set to be submitted after the summer recess.

However, the government remains at odds with regional authorities in Crete over a plan to build a permanent transit facility on the island. This controversy adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing migrant crisis in Greece.

In a separate incident off the coast of Datça in Muğla, Turkey, on Aug. 17, 86 illegal migrants, including 20 children, were rescued. Two human smugglers were arrested in connection with this incident. On the previous day, Turkish authorities apprehended 115 undocumented migrants and rescued 25 others in separate operations off the coast of İzmir.

The migrant crisis continues to be a pressing issue in the region, with both countries grappling with the challenges it presents. The incidents off the coasts of Turkey and Greece serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those seeking a better life in Europe.
