Migrants at the Hohen Rhön border today - A call for recollection and contemplation, August 30, 25

On August 30, 2025, at 10:00 AM, join a unique hike at the "Dreiländereck" pension in Birx, Am Sportplatz 7. This historical journey will take you through the tripoint of Bavaria, Hesse, and Thuringia, offering breathtaking views of the Thuringian Forest, Grabfeld, and Wasserkuppe, among others.

During the hike, you'll pass by forgotten border installations, such as barbed wire and concrete posts, and learn about the "illegal" small border traffic that existed between East and West. Eyewitness Jens Graf will guide you, sharing insights from his personal experiences and providing clarification through documents and photos.

Birx, a location that has been at the inner-German border since 1945, will offer a glimpse into the life of its residents in the restricted area. You'll also discover old border stones from previous centuries, remnants that still stand today, 35 years after reunification.

The hike, approximately 5 kilometers long, will take you through areas that were once part of the 500-meter protective strip. After the hike, you'll have the opportunity to register for further hikes scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2025, and by arrangement.

This event is open to all, and a fee of 10 euros per person will be charged. To secure your spot, registration can be made by phone: 0171-2029190.

As you traverse this historical landscape, you'll gain a deeper understanding of the relationships that existed between residents on both sides of the border, and the cooperation between military border protection and villagers to maintain border security and improve livelihoods.

Join us for this enlightening experience and step back in time to witness a piece of history that still lingers in the landscape of Birx.
